Term: Reticular core

Definition: There is no generally accepted definition of the reticular core, which essentially consists of those regions that have not been assigned to particular sensory and motor systems. We consider that the reticular core extends into the forebrain to include the lateral zone of the hypothalamus, ventral thalamus, and epithalamus. It plays a major role in controlling behavioral state, and in polymodal integration.
