Definition: Neurons, also known as nerve cells, are the conducting cell type of the nervous system; they are the fundamental units of neural circuits or networks and establish functional contacts with other cells by way of chemical or electrical synapses (Dorland Illustrated Medical Dictionary, 2003, p. 1256; Swanson, 2003, p. 245).
