Bed Nucleus Of The Stria Terminalis
abbreviation: BST
Abbreviation
BST
Species
Rat
Description of part
The BST is positioned between the ACB rostrally and a transverse plane parallel to the anterior border of the prethalamic stria medullaris caudally (see S2). Medially the BST is bound by the lateral septum and the MP0A; laterally by the internal capsule and the GP (see H6). The nucleus is traversed by the fibers of the anterior commissure (ac) and the commissural component of the stria terminalis (sbc); the stria terminalis itself spreads out into the BST. Dorsally the BST extends to the ventral surface of the lateral ventricle (see T5, S3). Proceeding from rostral to caudal the BST overlies the SIC and the LPOA (T3-T4). Whereas the structures last mentioned extend in a caudolateral direction, the BST continues strictly caudally and arches downwards along the medial surfaces of the SIL and LPOA (T6). In this position the BST is interposed between the SIL and LPOA laterally and the MPOA, the POM and the AHA medially (H4-H5). The caudalmost extreme of the BST protrudes slightly into the AHA (T7, Sl). The outline of the BST corresponds rather well with that indicated by Swanson and Cowan ('79), Bleier et al. ('79), and de Olmos et al. ('85).
