The DL subnucleus is surrounded medially and ventrally by the anterior lateral (AL) subnucleus (Fig. 1B,C). Rostrally, AL spans between DL and VL, so a small portion of AL extends beneath the anterior commissure. Neurons in AL are medium-staining and oval- to teardrop-shaped with an indistinct nuclear border and little cytoplasm; they are often oriented parallel to the strial fibers which surround DL (Fig. 4C). Some scattered round, light-staining neurons from DL are also found in AL.
