Description of part
The anterior BSTM is located dorsal to the crossing fibers of the anterior commissure, lying within the course of the dorsal component of the stria terminalis as it traverses the dorsal and rostral aspects of the commissure. It borders the ventral lateral septum rostromedially, and reaches the rostrodorsal border of the BSTV ventrocaudally. Dorsally, the stria terminalis separates the anterior BSTM from the posterior BSTM while ventrally the anterior and posterior BSTM are separated by the commissural component of the stria terminalis. Medially, the cells of the anterior BSTM are medium sized and irregular in shape and dispersed among the fibers of the stria terminalis. More laterally, the cells are smaller and more tightly packed. The anterior BSTM corresponds to a subpart of the medial bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (Swanson 1976) and Swanson and Cowan (1979) while the posterior BSTM cuts across their medial and preoptic BST. The anterior and posterior BSTM, as well as the BSTI are included within the medial bed nucleus of the stria terminalis of McDonald (1983a). The anterior BSTM is included within the "a" division of the BST of Bleier et al. (1979), which also encompasses our dorsal parts of the small celled and medium celled columns of the posterior BSTM.
