Description of part

The posterior BSTM is a heterogeneous group of cells arranged in columnar fashion following the postcommissural fibers of the stria terminalis. It is the largest and longest of all divisions of the BST extending continuously from the caudal uppermost part of the paraseptal BST, behind the anterior commissure to the anterior hypothalamus where it merges with the anterior hypothalamic area (AH). For most of its dorsoventral extent, it caudally borders the stria medullaris, and medially borders the fornix, becoming separated at the paraseptal level from the lateral and ventral divisions of the BST by the intermediate division of the BST and the dorsal extension of the preoptic area.
