Bed Nucleus Of The Stria Terminalis Rhomboid Nucleus

abbreviation: BSTrh

Abbreviation

BSTrh

Species

Rat

Description of part

A small nucleus that is more or less rhomboid in shape when viewed in frontal sections can be identified caudal and ventral to the oval and juxtacapsular nuclei, lying between the internal capsule and the ventromedially coursing commissural component of the stria terminalis of De Olmos ('72; and De Olmos and Ingram, '72). The uniform size of its round-to-multipolar neurons (Figs. 13, 14) distinguishes it from ventrally adjacent, undifferentiated parts of the anterolateral area. Although the borders of the rhomboid nucleus are not as clearly defined on cytoarchitectonic grounds as some of the other nuclei in the BST, it is well characterized by the presence of substance P (Ju et al., '89)- and somatostatin (Woodhams et al., '83)-immunoreactive neurons.
