Species

Description of part
BST3 forms the rostroventral portion of the BST and lies beneath the BST1, the BST2, and the anterior commissure (T3-T5, S1-S3, H4-H6). The BST3 overlies the SIC and LPOA. It is caudally flanked by the BST5. BST3 is characterized mainly by medium-sized and polymorphic neurons which tend to arrange themselves in several clusters. The medial wall of RST3 is just below the anterior commissure indented by a nucleus, previously described by Raisman and Field ('73) as the round nucleus of the preoptic region and recently designated by Simerly et al. ('84) as the parastrial nucleus of the medial preoptic area (POPS; T4, S1, H5). Ventral to the anterior commissure, i.e., within the confines of the BST3, a dense cluster of atriopeptin-like reactive neurons have been identified by Standaert et al. ('86). The BST3 and also the BST1 are occupied by a considerable number of estrogen-concentrating neurons (Fahrbach et al., '86). The BST2 and the lateral half of the BST3 appeared to be a significant source of peptidergic fibers coursing towards the parabrachial nucleus, the central gray and the dorsal vagal complex (Gray and Magnuson, '87).
