Description of part
BST5 is a transversally oriented, curved cellular plate of only a few cells' thickness (T6, SI-S3, H4-H6). It reaches dorsally up to the commissural component of the stria terminalis (stc), which passes through the BST5 on its way to the anterior commissure. The cell bodies located within the BST5-trajectory of the stc are indicated by de Olmos et al. ('85) as the bed nucleus of the stc. BST5 extends downwards between BSTl and BST3 rostrally and BST4 caudally. The medium-sized to large and rather darkly staining cell bodies of BST5 are very conspicuous, which makes it easy to demarcate BST5 from the neighbouring parts of the BST (Fig. 22). The number of cell bodies within BST5 increases from dorsal to ventral. These neurons are unevenly distributed, giving the impression of the presence of several cellular subgroups within BST5. One of these subgroups is a small cluster of large, darkly staining and densely packed cell bodies, located at the medial margin of BST5. This cluster was identified by Simerly et al. ('84) as the posterodorsal preoptic nucleus (POPD; H5); it probably corresponds with the anterior commissure nucleus as depicted in the atlas of Paxinos and Watson ('86). Van Leeuwen and Caffe ('83) found numerous vasopressine immunoreactive neurons within the BST and the anterior commissural nucleus; these two loci are likely to correspond with our BST5 and POPD, respectively. In the present study the neurons which closely surround the anterior commissure are not considered to constitute a separate nucleus commissurae anterioris (Koeinig and Klippel, '63), but are rather taken to belong either to the BST, or the septa1 region or the medial preoptic area.
