The intercalated nuclei (I; Atlas Figs 17 to 21) are oval and elongated plate-like clusters of small to medium sized (15 micrometers-20 micrometers), tightly packed neurons located within the spaces existing: (i) between certain amygdaloid nuclei; (ii) between some amygdaloid nuclei and the striatum; and (iii) along the longitudinal association bundle, the intra-amygdaloid portion of the stria terminalis, and between the La or BL and the external capsule, that is, the paracapsular groups (Figs 1A, B, C; 3B, C; 4C).
