Description of part

The intermediate column (Figs. 15D, 16A, 27 A, and 27B) is composed of loosely arranged, more lightly stained, medium-sized, spindle- and angular-shaped cells. Throughout most of its course, this column lies just rostrally apposed to the stria medullaris (Figs. 28A, 28C, and 28E). At its caudal end, it separates from the dispersing fibers of the stria medullaris, but at the same time comes to lie rostral and ventral to the descending columns of the fornix. Caudally, the cells of the medium-sized-celled column merge imperceptibly with the medium-sized-celled portion of the anterior hypothalamus (Fig. 16A), whereas, dorsally and laterally, the cells of the medium-sized-celled column form the floor of the lateral ventricle.
