Description of part
KF is a homogeneous collection of cells having a mean average diameter of 16.5 ± 0.3 micrometers (S.E.M.) (see Fig. 5). These cells are further characterized by their pyramidal shape, very distinct nucleolus, and the dark, fibrillar pattern of their cytoplasmic staining (Fig. 4F). A few cells belonging to KF can be seen in the most rostral part of PB, but the largest part of the nucleus is in the midportion of PB. By the level at which the SCP come into contact with the cerebellum, KF has disappeared. Rostrally KF is situated immediately ventral to the lateral pole of the SCP and medial to the lateral lemniscus (see Fig. 1B). Caudally, the external media1 nucleus (see below) is interposed between KF and the SCP (see Fig. 2A). Along its ventrolateral border KF is separated from the middle cerebellar peduncle by the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus. Throughout its extent, KF is bounded medially by the larger and more sparsely distributed neurons of the pontine tegmentum
