Description of part

The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis has been traditionally divided into medial and lateral parts. The medial part of the bed nucleus may be further divided into anterior, ventral, and posterior parts. In Golgi sections (e.g., McDonald, 1983a), neurons of the medial bed nucleus are similar in all subdivisions. The cells have ovoid perikarya 14-18 micrometers long and 10-13 micrometers wide, with two to three primary dendrites that branch rather sparingly. The dendrites extend 300-400 micrometers and vary in spine density. Although cell bodies and the axon hillock may exhibit spines, the axons of these cells exhibit long beaded collaterals that do not arborize close to the parent cell, and the principal axons do not seem to have a preferred orientation.
