This system is meant to include the medial forebrain bundle as it is traditionally viewed (Gurdjian 1925, Nauta and Haymaker 1969, Nieuwenhuys et al. 1982), its extention through the brainstem into the spinal cord (e.g., Saper et al. 1976b, Swanson and McKellar 1979), and the major fiber tracts that feed into it.
