Parabrachial Nucleus External Lateral Nucleus

abbreviation: PBel

Abbreviation

Species

Rat

Description of part

The neurons of the external Latera1 nucleus are cytologically similar to the cells in the extreme lateral subdivision but the borders of the two groups are easily defined. The external lateral subnucleus is further distinguished by a characteristic slightly metachromatic staining of the neuropil within it, which is unique among the subnuclei of PB. The external lateral cell group extends caudally almost to the point at which the lateral expansion of the SCP contacts the dorsal surface of the pons. Throughout its extent the external lateral subnucleus surrounds the dorsolateral edge of the SCP, abutting on neurons of PBm which surround the ventrolateral edge of the SCP (see Figs. 1,2).
