Description of part
This round ciuster of cells., the internai lateral nucleus (see Figs. 1B, 3B, 4A), is set off by a relatively cell-poor zone which surrounds it. It is composed of a homogeneous group of neurons, 16.3 ± 0.2 micrometers in mean average diameter (see Fig. 5). The perikarya are round, with indistinct nucleoli, and dark, coarsely granular cytoplasmic staining. The interna1 lateral group is situated immediately ventral to the dorsal surface of the pons, and dorsal to the medial tip of the SCP in the middle third of PB. Its rostral border is at the level at which the inferior colliculus separates from the pons, and it extends caudally only about 3OO micrometers, to the level at which the root of the trochlear nerve leaves the dorsal pons. It is situated amid the smaller and more sparsely distributed neurons of the central lateral nucleus.
