In case FC-3 (area 32 injection), labeled fibers enter the thalamus through the anterior segment of the inferior thalamic peduncle, traverse and appear to terminate densely within the rostral part of the nucleus reticularis thalami, and course, grouped in tiny fascicles, dorsomedially through the anteromedial nucleus to the paratenial (PT), mediodorsal (MD), and lateral habenular nuclei (figs. 2D,E). In the isocortex, striking numbers of retrogradely marked cells were found in the prelimbic and anterior cingulate areas in addition to the substantial labeling in the infralimbic, secondary motor, ectorhinal, perirhinal, and ventral orbital areas and in the rostral pole of the claustrum (Fig. 3A-D, J-L). Most of the cortical labeles cells were pyramidal neurons in layer V; however, particularly in the infralimbic, prelimbic, and anterior cingulate areas, conspicuous numbers of marked cells also extended into layer VI (Fig. 3A-D).
