Description of part
...is a collection of large, well staining cells in Nissl sections, which spans the entire rostrocaudal extent of the basolateral complex, appearing rostrally earlier than its dorsolateral, ventromedial and ventral companions, the La, BM, and BLV respectively, and extending further caudally than any of them. Anteriorly, the BL is composed of slightly larger and darker staining cells than posteriorly, and for this reason, a subdivision of the nucleus in anterior (BLA) and posterior (BLP) parts has been proposed (Krettek and Price, 1978b). Golgi preparations (Fig. 7C) show that except for differences in size, the large pyramidal neurons in the BL are practically identical in configuration to those described in the La. The preceding description of the BL is very similar to that presented by Krettek and Price (1978b). This, in turn, agrees well with the general description given by McDonald (1982b). The BL corresponds to the large celled part of the basal nucleus of Yu (1968), as well as to AB1 and AB3 subdivisions of the basal nucleus by Turner and Zimmer (1984).
