Description of part

In both the rat and cat, the basolateral nucleus, as defined here, contains the largest cells in the amygdaloid complex, and it may be readily delimited from the lateral and basomedial nuclei on this basis. Within the nucleus, more subtle differences in cell size provide the cytoarchitectonic basis for a further division into anterior and posterior divisions; the anterior division contains very large, deeply-staining cells, while the posterior division contains slightly smaller cells. This delineation of the basolateral nucleus as a whole is very similar to that by Fox (1940) and by Berman and Jones (1977) in the cat, but it differs substantially from the descriptions by Gurdjian ('28) and Brodal ('47) in the rat.
