Description of part
The dorsal lateral (DL) subnucleus is an oval-shaped, homogeneous cluster of round, lightly staining neurons with a prominent nucleolus and little cytoplasm (Fig. 4A). This distinctive cell cluster begins rostrally in a relatively cellfree area adjacent to the striatum. More caudally, DL is located dorsal to the anterior commissure and adjacent to the caudate-putamen and internal capsule (Fig. lB,C). With the crossing of the anterior commissure, DL moves dorsally to become continuous with cells in the supracapsular subnucleus (Fig. 2A). A group of smaller cells, also round and lightly staining, is found medial and dorsal to the main body of DL (Fig. 1C). Based on their connections and immunohistochemistry, these cells are probably part of DL.
