The intermediate (IM) subnucleus forms a wedge of cells rostrally between AM and the anterior lateral (AL) subnucleus and is just dorsal to the anterior commissure (Fig. 1B). With succeeding sections, IM can be distinguished by its medium-sized, pale-staining cells which are located between AL and the receding anterior commissure (Figs. 1C, 4D).
