Description of part

Rostrally, the posterior medial (PM) subnucleus is a distinctive round cluster, partially encapsulated by a cell-poor area and located above the receding anterior commissure (Fig. 2A). Caudally, as the fibers from the fornix and stria medullaris descend, PM shifts to form a tight band of cells oriented diagonally (Fig. 2B-D). This subnucleus consists of roundish, medium-staining, tightly packed neurons with fine granular cytoplasm and one to several nucleoli (Fig.3D). Neurons located ventrally and laterally within PM are more ioosely packed than those in the “tight band”; these neurons extend to the most caudal limits of the BST where they lie ventrally around the fornix.
