Description of part
The posterodorsal nucleus (PO) is a round cluster of tightly packed, darkly staining, medium- to large-sized multipolar neurons located immediately adjacent to PO (Figs. 2B,C, 3G). The PD has been included within the preoptic continuation of the BST (Fig. 2B; Swanson, 1976), and more recently, it has been described as the posterodorsal nucleus (Paxinos and Watson, 1986; Ju and Swanson, 1989). The PD and PO have very similar Nissl-staining characteristics but they can be differentiated by their cell packing density and their immunohistochemistry (Ju and Swanson, 1989; Ju et al., 1989).
