The ventral lateral (VL) subnucleus is located beneath VM and the anterior commissure (Fig. 1B-D). At rostra1 levels, VL appears continuous with the parastrial nucleus (PS); with succeeding sections, PS migrates medially toward the third ventricle, thus causing these two cell groups to “split apart.” When viewed in the sagittal plane, VL appears as two clusters of cells. Rostral VL is a small cell cluster distinguished by its darkly staining, closely packed, fusiform cells oriented in a horizontal (i.e., medial to lateral) direction (Figs. 1B,C, 4H). Caudal VL contains large, darkly staining, closely packed, multipolar cells with prominent nucleoli; these cells resemble the preoptic neurons which are scattered beneath VL (Fig. 1D).
