Description of part

At rostral levels, the ventral medial (VM) subnucleus is continuous dorsomedially with AM (Fig. 1A). With subsequent sections, VM is located beneath the anterior commissure where it surrounds the ventral lateral subnucleus and parastrial nucleus. Caudally, VM extends lateral to the receding anterior commissure to form a closely packed, ovoid group surrounded by the posterior lateral and ventral lateral BST subnuclei and the parastrial nucleus (Fig. 1D). Rostral VM consists of loosely packed, medium-staining, oval- to spindle-shaped cells oriented parallel to the anterior commissure (Fig. lB,C). Cells within the caudal extension of VM (Fig. 4F) are more heterogeneous and irregular in shape than rostral VM cells and closely resemble cells in AM (compare with Fig. 3A). In addition, scattered cells from neighboring subnuclei (particularly the posterior lateral subnucleus) are also present within this caudal extension.
