Description of part
The anterior cortical nucleus (cat, fig. 1; rat, figs. 5-7) appears rostrally immediately lateral to the nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract, and it extends over the rostra1 one-third of the amygdaloid complex. Like the other olfactory cortical areas which receive direct projections from the olfactory bulb (Price, 1973), it can be considered to have three layers: a plexiform layer (I), a layer of moderately densely-packed pyramidal cells (11) and a deeper layer of more loosely-arranged cells (1111, although in the anterior cortical nucleus these are less distinct than in other areas. The cells of the nucleus are smaller than in the adjacent areas, and layer II, in particular, is less densely packed than the equivalent layer in the prepiriform cortex, laterally, and the periamygdaloid cortex, caudally. Throughout its anteroposterior extent the deeper cells of the anterior cortical nucleus in the rat form a well-defined oval mass which extends dorsally into the amygdaloid complex (figs. 6, 7).
