Description of part

The central nucleus (cat, figs. 2-4; rat, figs.6-9) is surrounded by fibers of the longitudinal association bundle laterally and ventrally, which sharply demarcate it from the lateral and basolateral nuclei, and by fibers of the stria terminalis medially, which separate it from the medial nucleus. However, the nucleus is not as well-defined at its rostral and caudal poles where it blends with the anterior amygdaloid area and the putamen, respectively. At rostral levels in the rat the central nucleus is more readily distinguished from the putamen on the basis of its smaller, more darkly-staining and tightly-packed cells, and a slender fiber bundle arches dorsomedially between the two. In both the cat and the rat medial and lateral subdivisions may be recognized within the nucleus.
