Description of part

The nucleus accumbens needs little description as it has been described and illustrated in a number of species. However, it may be noted that the ventral aspect of the nucleus is broken up into a number of cell clusters by the fibers of the medial forebrain bundle. Heimer (1972) has termed these aggregates "cell bridges" since a number of them appear as fingers of cells extending from the nucleus accumbens to the deeper layers of the olfactory tubercle. The ventral aspect of the nucleus accumbens appears to be continuous laterally with the ventral aspect of the putamen (fig. 1).
