Description of part

In both the rat and the cat (Berman and Jones, 1977) a ventral division of the putamen extends into the region deep to the olfactory tubercle (fig. 1). Rostrally, it is continuous with the nucleus accumbens around the anterior commissure and caudally it extends into the lateral aspect of the anterior amygdaloid area. Its cells are similar to those in the putamen dorsal to the anterior commissure, but tend to be somewhat more deeply staining. In addition, fingers of cells similar to those associated with the nucleus accumbens extend from the ventral part of the putamen towards the olfactory tubercle. This ventral part of the putamen appears to correspond to the area labeled “fundus striati” by Heimer (1972).
