The nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract (fig. 5) is well-defined and it need only be noted that three layers may be recognized within it, although their form is unique among the olfactory cortical areas. Layer II is represented by a circumscribed oval mass of large, very deeply staining cells, deep to a molecular layer (layer I). Layer III is formed by slightly larger cells which are more looselyarranged as a “cap” deep to layer II.
