Description of part
Because of the slightly smaller size of the cells in the posterior division, the distinction between it and the lateral nucleus is less clear, except at the caudal pole of the amygdala where the two are separated by a band of fibers. At this caudal level, the posterior division forms a crescent shaped mass, which extends ventrally to become continuous with the ventral part of the lateral entorhinal area.
