Description of part
The topography and cytoarchitecture of the substantia innominata, the nucleus accumbens and the putamen have been thoroughly described by Berman and Jones (1977) in the cat, and a similar description appears to be applicable in the rat with only minor modifications. The substantia innominata is not as well-defined as in the cat but it is readily recognizable as a collection of large, angular cells which extend medially and rostrally from the amygdaloid complex, ventral to the internal capsule and globus pallidus. Caudally, it lies dorsal to the anterior amygdaloid area and the nucleus of the horizontal limb of the diagonal band, while rostrally it is continuous with the multiform layer of the olfactory tubercle.
