There is general agreement that the medial and lateral parts of the superior olive are surrounded by a ring of periolivary gray matter, with a superior (e.g., Harrison and Feldman 1970) or dorsomedial (e.g., Morest 1973) periolivary "nucleus" that is particularly obvious. There is, however, little agreement about parcelling this ring of gray matter (some parts have been referred to as components of the nucleus of the trapezoid body). Because we could not distinguish clearly separate cell groups in this region, it has been referred to simply as the periolivary region (see Osen et al. 1984).
