Description of part

This small compact, rostral cell group (Figs. 26-30) was named the medial preoptic nucleus by Bleier e t al. (1979), but most other researchers reserve this term for the larger nucleus that succeeds it posteriorly. Both of these nuclei are part of the sexually dimorphic region (Bleier et al., 1982). For the mouse brain we have adopted the term anteroventral periventricular nucleus (Swanson 1992), which is descriptive of its position and has become more widely used.
