Description of part

At the caudal limit of the subthalamic nucleus there is a tightly packed group of cells that extends caudally from the posterior limit of the magnocellular nucleus of the lateral hypothalamus to about 200 mm rostral to the substantia nigra (Sturrock, 1991; Broadwell and Bleier, 1977). The appearance of this distinct cluster of cells is quite different from the subthalamic nucleus in the rat, monkey (Paxinos e t al., 1996), or human (Paxinos and Huang, 1995) and we have not assimilated it to the subthalamic nucleus as have some authors (Sturrock, 1991; Broadwell and Bleier, 1977). Wang (1995) has suggested that the cell group should be distinguished from the subthalamic nucleus as the parasubthalamic nucleus (PSTh), and we have followed his suggestion.

Endorsement

The approach used by the collator Mihail Bota is not endorsed by the author of the nomenclature.

Collator argument

The hierarchy of this region was constructed using the rat atlas Paxinos and Watson 1998. We included this region directly under the forebrain, but see Swanson 1992, Swanson 1998 and Bowden 2000.
