According to Gurdjian 1928, Graybiel and Ragsdale 1979, Van der Kooy and Carter 1981, Rajakumar et al. 1993. In the rat the lateral segment is often referred to as the globus pallidus, whereas the medial segment is often to referred to as the entopeduncular nucleus. This anomalous nomenclature will probably gradually disappear.
