While it is common to divide this nucleus into dorsal and ventral parts, or into dorsal, intermediate, and ventral parts, the architecture and connections of this cell group have not been examined in any detail in the rat, where it has been done, it is obvious that the NLL is an extremely complex region (see Covey and Casseday 1986). We have not attempted to parcellate the NLL.
